Description
Pedal To Progression is offering the MIAS Level 1 & 2 Mountain Bike Instructor Award Training and Assessment courses from The Outdoor Learning Centre, West Baldwin, Isle Of Man.
Cost: £280.00 which includes registration fee to MIAS.
Course Dates: Level 1 & 2 Tuesday 1st & Wednesday 2nd September 2026
Candidates are to provide their own bike, riding kit and equipment that they would using take on a ride.
Please bring your own lunch on both days.
Examples of applications of the qualification-
- Teachers using level 1 to bring mountain biking into their curriculum, and level 2 to lead more demanding rides e.g. during
aspirations week. - Military personnel leading groups in Adventure Training.
- Outdoor Education instructors looking to expand their repertoire.
- Cycling club members looking for accreditation to lead group rides.
Course content will include:
- Group management + communication
- Navigation + Route planning
- Risk assessment
- Equipment checks
- Riding Skills
- Basic / Emergency repairs
- Weather
Assessment – You will be asked to navigate and lead the group between two pre-determined points. You will be expected to either teach a skill or coach an activity appropriate for the group. You will also be asked to demonstrate competence as a mountain bike rider, and have a sound understanding of basic bike mechanics.
There are currently three levels of instructor:
Level 1 is for those wishing to lead rides on non-technical terrain (forest tracks, canal towpaths etc).
Level 2 is aimed at those who wishing to lead rides on technical (rocky / demanding terrain).
Level 3 is for those wishing to lead rides on mountainous terrain.

The Level 1 & Level 2 courses are run together. The candidates and instructor will decide during the training period which assessment the candidate will undergo; Level 1 or Level 2. The course consists of training and assessment in two days.
The Level 3 Course is run separately. It covers areas defined as mountainous by the Mountain Training UK, AALA may also require you to hold additional qualifications to work in this terrain such as ML, WGLA. The course consists of training and assessment in two days.
Please note: In order to practice as a mountain bike instructor you will also need a relevant outdoor first aid certificate and your own insurance.
