This phenomenon, known as the “crab mentality,” is an analogy for the selfish and envious behavior displayed by some individuals in response to other’s success.

The crab mentality is defined as someone’s tendency to hold down others who they consider to be better than themselves in any aspect. People with this mentality may bully, overly criticize, or dismiss those who are ahead of them. They may also spread negative beliefs and attitudes in an attempt to hold back the progress of others. This can be driven by emotional motivations, a lack of knowledge or experience, or the bandwagon effect.
